The short answer
Yes, if the car is old enough. Under North Carolina General Statute 20-62.1, a salvage yard or secondary metals recycler can buy a motor vehicle 12 model years old or older without a title.
What you'll sign and show
- A written statement certifying that you have the lawful right to sell the car, that it's at least 12 model years old, and that there's no loan or lien on it.
- A statement that the car will be scrapped, crushed or dismantled for parts only.
- Your name, address and driver license number, plus a copy of a valid driver license or state or federal photo ID. Without ID, the yard can't complete the sale.
What the yard does
- It checks with the DMV that the car hasn't been reported stolen before buying it.
- It reports the purchase to the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System within 72 hours and keeps the records for at least 2 years.
Newer than 12 model years?
You'll need the title. Get a duplicate from the NCDMV before you sell.
