The short answer
Licensed auto dismantlers in California need proof that you own the car. Unlike some states, California doesn't have an age-based shortcut for scrapping an old car without a title. If yours is lost, the fix is a DMV form.
Lost, stolen or damaged title: form REG 227
- Use the DMV's Application for Replacement or Transfer of Title (REG 227). You can submit it in person or by mail.
- Fees vary with the type of transfer; the DMV's fee calculator gives the exact amount.
After you sell: release your liability
California requires sellers to submit a Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability (NRL) within 5 days of the sale. Do it even when you sell to a junkyard, so tickets and fees on the car stop coming to you.
