Junking a car without a title in Michigan

Michigan's rule for selling a car for scrap, and what to do when the title is missing.

The short answer

In Michigan, junking a car runs through the title. Under Michigan Compiled Laws section 257.242, you sell a vehicle to a dealer for salvage by writing the word "scrap" in bold on the face of the title, signing it, and assigning the title to the dealer that's buying it. The state won't issue a title for that vehicle again.

If the title is lost

Replace it through the Michigan Secretary of State before you sell. Licensed automotive recyclers and used parts dealers need the title to take the car.

Watch out for

  • Anyone offering to scrap a car with no title at all. Michigan's process is built on the title, so ask the buyer exactly what paperwork they'll file.
